Starting a fitness journey can be a demanding task. Often, the vast amount of information online can make even the first step overwhelming.

It all starts with nutrition. Nutrition is perhaps the most important part of living a healthy lifestyle. You can never outwork a bad diet, much like trying to save money whilst having bad spending habits.

To better understand this, it is important to know the three main ‘macro-nutrients’ which are: carbohydrate, protein, and fat.

In typical financial institution fashion, let’s compare these ‘macros’ to financial concepts:

Carbohydrates:

Carbohydrates are your main source of income. They provide the body with its primary source of energy, much like how cash flow fuels immediate expenses. Just as you might use cash to cover day-to-day costs, carbohydrates fuel your body’s immediate energy needs, such as powering through a workout or meeting daily activity requirements. Carbohydrates are found in foods like bread, pasta, rice, fruits, and vegetables.

Proteins:

Proteins can be compared to long-term investments in your financial portfolio. They are the building blocks of muscles, playing a crucial role in repairing and maintaining the body’s structures and functions. Just as investments grow over time, proteins contribute to long-term health, supporting muscle growth, repair, and overall well-being. Sources of protein include meat, fish and eggs.

Fats:

Fats are like savings in a savings account. They are a concentrated source of stored energy. This can be compared to your savings account, as savings provide a reserve of funds for future needs, just like how fats serve as a reserve of energy for your body. Like savings, fats provide a steady reserve of energy when carbohydrates are depleted, ensuring sustained energy levels, and supporting bodily functions. However, it’s crucial to choose healthy fats, such as those found in avocados, nuts, seeds, olive oil, and fatty fish, as they offer valuable nutrients and support overall health.

Just as a balanced investment portfolio diversifies risk and ensures financial stability, a balanced diet that includes all three macronutrients in appropriate proportions promotes better health and wellbeing. By understanding the nutrients you consume, you can make informed dietary choices that will help you to live healthier.

Now that you’ve got the knowledge on macro-nutrients, it’s time to use this to fuel your body for your next workout!
